Why Isn’t My Heat Pump Blowing Warm Air in Heating Mode?

Heat pumps keep homeowners in Roxboro, NC, warm and comfortable during the coldest months of the year. Sometimes, your system may malfunction and start blowing cold air during winter. Here are some possible reasons your heat pump is blowing cold air in heating mode:

Reversing Valve Problems

Heat pumps allow you to enjoy the benefits of cooling and heating in one combined system, and that’s why many homeowners prefer buying them. A heat pump completes both of these functions with the help of a reversing valve.

A reversing valve is situated along the refrigerant line and changes the direction in which the refrigerant flows depending on the season. During the warmer months, the evaporator coil absorbs heat from your indoor air. The refrigerant relays this heat to the outdoor condenser coil. The condenser coil then releases this heat outside.

During winter, the outdoor coil starts absorbing heat from outside and the refrigerant transfers this heat into your home. When the reversing valve develops problems, the refrigerant continues drawing heat from your home and transferring it outside instead of the opposite. A service technician can replace the faulty reversing valve for you.

Refrigerant Leaks

The refrigerant may start leaking when there is corrosion on the outdoor coil. Another potential issue that can lead to refrigerant leaks is damaged lines, such as if you nick them when mowing your lawn.

When the fluid starts leaking, its volume reduces. Reduced volume means there is not enough refrigerant to relay heat into your home from outside. Allow a professional service technician to repair refrigerant leaks rather than trying to handle the issue by yourself, as refrigerant can be hazardous to your health and the environment.

Thermostat Issues

Your thermostat communicates your temperature needs to your heat pump. An interruption to this communication means your instructions will not reach your heat pump. Usually, a faulty wiring connection may interrupt the smooth communication between your thermostat and the heat pump.

Contact Regan & Son HVAC, Plumbing & Electric for outstanding heat pump services if your unit doesn’t provide the required comfort. We will bring our best tools and take care of the problem interrupting your comfort.
